Light Packing for Summer Holidays
If there is anything that I insist on when I travel, it's packing only in a carry-on. It's easier to move from place to place, you don't have to worry about waiting at the baggage claim or your bag getting lost, less weight to carry around, and NO FEES.
Basically less stress, more fun, and less weight on your shoulders, literally.
Whether I am traveling for a weekend, 7 days, 2 weeks or longterm there is one thing that makes packing infinity easier: packing versatile items.
Items that can be used multiple ways for multiple end uses lighten my bag the fastest because I can pack one thing in place of three, four, or more items.
Here is a list of the most versatile items in my travel pack
A sleek pair of walking shorts
These navy walking shorts are always one of the first things in my backpack. They have all the tech and functionality you need for a hike (you can even take them on a run), but they look nice enough to style as casual wear for sightseeing.
It's also handy to have quick-dry gear for very hot climates.
Soft crepe pants
A great crepe pant is the vacation version of jeans.
They can be styled casually for daytime activities and then quickly converted to an elegant evening look with a nice blouse and accessories.
A sporty bra
A versatile bra is my best friend. Right now, I am loving Knixwear. The one I have is reversible black and tan (hello!) and it's made to be used for both daywear and active pursuits. Try rinsing it or taking it in the shower with you, and then hanging to dry for use the next day.
A Tencel dress
Tencel is a natural fiber made from eucalyptus trees. Compared to cotton, it is softer, stronger, more breathable, and more resistant to bacteria and odor. This makes it a great fabric for an everyday holiday dress. Bonus: Tencel is a sustainable fibre made in a closed loop process.
A Turkish towel
I bought one of these on a Turkish vacation in a cute little shop. I had no idea how good it was going to be until I started using it, but now I don't go on any vacations without it!
Turkey is known for high quality cotton. These Turkish cotton towels feel soft and are very absorbent while being super thin, making them perfect for carry-on packing.
You can use this for anything- a regular towel, a beach towel, a scarf, a tablecloth, a blanket, a sarong or a throw.
A bathing suit that doubles as a top
When I am on a beach holiday, I love to pack a bathing suit that looks nice with shorts so that I wear it to lunch or to a beach club.
Dual purpose accessories
Accessories are enemy #1 to carry-on packing as they tend be so bulky. I always try to pack accessories that can be used for several purposes, such as:
- A little clutch bag that doubles as a Kindle case
- Nike Frees for exercise in all black so that can pass as a casual sneaker
- A tote back for the beach used as a shoe bag when packing
What list of versatile items would be complete without black leggings?! A good pair are always first in my backpack because they go everywhere!
